Tomás Chávez, CF, Retired
José 'Devil Dude' Chávez, P, Hoboken Heroes
José Chávez, 3B, Connecticut All-Stars
José Chávez, P, Retired
Tomás Chapa, 3B, Meridian Enforcers (NM)
Chavez was an on-base machine who did it with both hits and walks, hit with good gap power, and played a very good defensive center field
(I also voted for Ratchet Monroe and Leonardo Suarez but those are both homer votes.)
What percentage of votes should be required for Wave 1 players to stay on the ballot or should we do a one and done ballot for each wave?
throwing this out there...how about 50% to stay on and be eligible for the next wave?
it should certainly be higher than the usual 2 votes (which amounts to roughly 10% I think). 25% to 50% somewhere

Checking out the Hall of Fame and @mstreeter06 Did you like trade for every future Hall of Famer from 2050-2055 Because I just looked at like 6 players you had in early 50s
Yuda pitching Tomas Chavez earlier... He's a lock IMO. I had him ranked as the 10th best centerfielder back when I did the 75 for 75 study. All of the CF that ranked ahead of him are in the HoF except for number 8 (Rob Dorsey)... who we'll see on the ballot later on.
https://www.npblbaseball.com/forum/index.php?topic=7646.0
That point system is interesting, for Your rankings how does it work? @mass_gm
This is during the time where I was being a bad GM lol so I totally missed this ima read it now
The base statistic for my rankings was WAR. Each player's season WAR was adjusted based on their WAR from the previous 3 seasons, and also a small adjustment for injuries.
After the WARs were adjusted, I also included a point system for being the top scorer at the players' position (YOPDI). My final rankings was a composite of the player's (1) top season, (2) top 3 seasons (3) top 5 seasons (4) top 10 seasons (5) career total (6) YOPDI. The composite score had 40% weight towards items 3 and 6 with just 5% weight on the others.
I don't want to unduly influence anyone's ballot by saying the 75 for 75 rankings is the be-all and end-all. Just bringing this up for conversation...
Using the 75 for 75 rankings... the HoF line is about rank 18 for position players and 75 for starting pitchers. Using that, the following players would be in:
2B Marvin Collins (9)
SS Angel Roman (9)
CF Thomas Chavez (10)
3B Bradley Tam (12)
CF Masafumi Nishida (13)
LF Leonardo Suarez (13)
2B Phil Lindsay (14)
CF Robinson Gonzalez (18)
P Terry Ferrell (19)
P William Bower (40)
P Ron Holloway (72)
Some of the edge cases:
1B Carlos Ramirez (19)
3B Leo Flynn (20)
LF Arlen Sepulveda (20)
C Jamal Patterson (24)
P Kelly Daniel (RP - 11)
P Mack Murray (SP - 51)
Those last two were primarily RP. I was never very happy with the ranking system for RP. Murray had enough starts to qualify as a SP in the rankings, but I don't trust that ranking since most of his contributions were as a RP.
it's not the end-all be-all but thanks for posting, because some of those were edge cases that I left on the outside and I might want to reconsider. I think I may have been putting too much weight on all-star appearances
like I considered Suarez a homer vote but he's firmly a strong candidate by that metric
As I look through player cards, my ballot is not going to include all of the supposed "in" players. Maybe my standard is tighter than I thought, but some of them don't impress me.
Extremely stupid question: this is probably covered somewhere, but are we voting in StatsPlus or in game...
Leonardo Suarez... His best 5 seasons were very good, which is why he ranks well on the 75 for 75. He was the best LF every year from 2040 to 2043 (he was very good in 38-39 as well). Outside of that... meh. He's on the fence for me. I prefer the "top seasons" guys over the "compiler" guys, but I just wish he had a few more seasons where he was good.
also, while he was a very good LF in his prime years, I think he benefits from a weak cohort the years he was the top LF
I think most, if not all, of the players on this particular ballot have been up for consideration already. Not to say that we shouldn't re-visit these players, but keep in mind that the "sure-things" of this era have already been admitted the Hall. This is likely to be one of the weakest ballots we'll see.
yeah I think these guys made it onto one or two crowded ballots in at least one of the attempted catch-ups
what's funny is one of my other ootp leagues is also doing a veterans' committee kind of thing to catch up from a long gap in HOF voting
I figured I went back a bit further than necessary but also wanted to be sure we didn't somehow miss someone
this is really cool man, I might fool around with this for my Solo league https://npbl.slack.com/archives/C012BF4NTB8/p1594993248031200
We're going to have 21 ballots so a player will need to get 16 votes to get elected (75% threshold). We'll likely have a few players inducted but we'll see.
Link to the spreadsheet I used for 75 for 75: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D2823nj57O_DcrNgw0D9eaHh_6uG-vq1/view?usp=sharing
The data table was so big that formulas began to really slow down things. So I used copy-pasteValues and that helped. The formulas I used are in the top row on the batters worksheet.
The worksheets numbered 1-9 are the totals by positions. I think I probably created some pivot tables to summarize the data and then again copy-pasteValues into these worksheets. Anyone who has questions, just lmk.
So I have two questions @mass_gm, The team pitching stats in the pitching tab is that for the pitchers?
My 2nd question Is how did you get a players primary position for Players who played multiple positions per season, I have done everything else on the batters tab names stats and using your formulas tho I will have to change the YOPDI formula but I can’t seem to get that part correct.
So for pitchers, I started with ERA+ (instead of WAR) and made some adjustments league ERA and home park. That's where the LgERA and LgTm_ERA come in. (I think that's what you are asking).
For position... I classified a player's position for his entire career, and not season-by-season. So a player could be called a 1B in every year of his career, even if he didn't play at 1B at all in a particular year. This could be a little weird in the YOPDI, as that player might get a YOPDI rank at 1B even though he didn't play any 1B, but I went with it anyway. I think in order to get the formulas I have working correctly, you'll need to resort the data by year/position/tvSTAT.
As to how I actually got the positions assigned to the players... I don't rightfully remember. I remember that there were a handful of players that I did some research to figure out what position to assign to them, but I don't exactly remember how I had identified them. Sorry that I don't have a better answer for you.
I can’t be expected not to do any work myself lol. OK I understand that so you basically took a player at the position they played for the most So for example Greg Harrison my third baseman is classified in your right field 75 for 75 but he played third base for way more years he would be a third Basemen for his career if you were doing it now.
For the pitchers that’s exactly what I was Looking for, I’m focussing on the batters for now And I have the sheets right now sorted by player ID so if I have to do it a little bit of research I will not mind that because I love looking at the history of my Universe
Thanks for the reply and thanks for putting in the work to make the sheet in the first place
TERRY wooo (I wasn't even in the league but still part of my franchise)
Nice to see Angel Roman make it - he was one of my best players before I left the Jacks
We have 18 ballots submitted with 2 new GMs, leaving 3 ballots that need to be cast at the minimum
What did we decide for minimum % of votes to stay on the ballot? 25-30%?
I thought we'd said 25 but I certainly don't object if you want to make it 30 and trim a few more off the list
Woo! Two former Jacks from the end of my tenure there and they join Timoteo Tarrico from that squad
Congratulations to Terry Farrell who never played for me but it was big for the Ohio Raptors
Shoot totally forgot. I'll work on getting that wave 2 up this morning while avoiding work as much as possible 🤣😎
I’ve been having intermittent internet problems all morning, so you can always blame that if work gets testy. 😉
That's been a consistent thing across the country with the shift to remote. Shows how much we need to treat broadband internet as an utility.
2084 HOF Voting is now open for Wave 2 of NPBL HOF catchup voting. 16 players return to the ballot (needed 30% of the Wave 1 vote). 71 players added to the eligible players pool from 2056-2060.
I adjusted the minimum % required to 30 from 25 and also moved the maximum years on the ballot to 10 from 15 to help keep things going during our catchup.

Noted on that contracted teams detail. I'll pass that along to Dave at StatsPlus. Might just be a coding thing where he didn't consider how to handle that.
it's also possible that's it's not because of the contracted team? not sure.
I made an assumption based on noticing it with Murray, but a few other guys seem to have the same problem
In another league I’m in Statsplus doesn’t always show the awards they won
any hints about possible induction numbers without spoiling us on names?
Just checked. We have a possible 23 ballots with the 1 vacancy so that means a player needs 18 votes (75%).
We have a player with 16 ballots out of 18 so he's looking good. Another player at 14/18 and 3 at 13/18.
Roughly 30-35 players will stay on the ballot as well for the next wave of voting
3 ballots to be submitted but we now have 1 for sure new HOF member, Bob Griffith. https://statsplus.net/npbl/player/3861
Still need HOF ballots from GA @Alex, NV @nevadagm, MA @mass_gm

(both in the sense of good players and in the sense of “Thornton Swackhammer”)
(seriously it’s a coin toss. Peak was in Virginia but he was in Minnesota longer and piled up more overall WAR there.)
He clearly would have enjoyed his time in Minnesota more. I mean... who would want to play for that tyrant who has been managing Virginia since the days they were the DC Senators? 😆
what’s most interesting is he was traded (in part?) for his replacement, who also has a HOF shot - https://statsplus.net/npbl/reports/news/html/players/player_10567.html
Might be a StatsLab ballot issue -- his stats only show 81 wins and not much WAR https://statsplus.net/npbl/player/2484?page=pitch
He absolutely should be in the hall of fame. Where are the rest of his numbers?
yeah honestly I’d be ok with just inducting him directly, it’s clearly a case where the migration from Catobase to Statslab and later to Statsplus messed some things up. If you click through to his OOTP page, all the stats are there.
I do have Catobase moved over https://matthewrstreeter.com/ootp/npbl/catobase/players/s/smithkevin967.html
He was CRAZY good, which is why it surprised me that he wasn't in the HoF yet. He should be on the Mount Rushmore of NPBL pitchers.
Voted. There are a few players I took a 2nd look at and put on my list who have been carried over
Let me know if there's any other players like Kevin that got missed
Looks like we'll have at least 1 new member of the NPBL HOF with 2 others in reach of the 75% voting minimum
No reason we can't keep catching up on our HOF voting during the season so I have enabled HOF voting in StatsPlus. We can try to get this wave of voting done by the end of the Regular Season at the latest so we can do our final catch-up wave in the offseason . https://statsplus.net/npbl/awards/

(I don’t have anything in mind, I just feel like we could stand to reduce it some). Maybe reduce the number of votes allowed over a few sessions
Right now we have it set to a max of 10 years on the ballot and needing to get 30% of the vote to remain on the next ballot. Happy to adjust it if we need to.
Ok. We’re already 5 years in with catchup votes so they’ll start falling off quickly
Reminder we have another catchup wave HOF ballot on-going to get done when possible before we finish this season
Need current HOF catch-up voting from: PA @chappy, GA @Alex, WA @LarryWashington (if you would like), LA @cbj-blaze, WI @wis-gm, TN @Steven Luker- Tennessee Hounds, MN @Marcus, MA @massgm, NS @x24rocks, VA @yuda_va
https://statsplus.net/npbl/awards
there will be eventually but because we went a couple decades without voting, we're catching up with a huge backlog of candidates
so as the catchup votes start falling off the ballot (I think this is the last year that we add a boatload of new people), we'll start decreasing how many votes we allow to get to normal-sized ballots
@yuda_va is correct and looks like we'll get at least 2 new members and potentially 4. 17 ballots in out of 22. Players need 75% of total ballots cast for induction.
One of the best classes of names tho this year on the Ballot
Final catch-up wave of HOF Voting to get us caught up with players retired in 2077 or earlier.
